Reeves moves between the giant personae of Grant and Lee and the regular men confronting their worst nightmares in battle. But it is equally a sympathetic and nuanced story of the individual human beings who fought, suffered and died in the battle. There are so many thoughtful details that brought to life for me this crucial moment in our country's history and made me think about it in a new way. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Bryan -- This slim volume doesn't add much to the story of the Wilderness : While it's clear this book is a labor of love for the author, A Fire In the Wilderness does little to expand the repository of the knowledge about the fighting in the Wilderness. To be fair, the battle was a chaotic, confusing mess that even the participants had trouble sorting out later. The author was poorly served by his editor, who didn't catch the same quotes used at different points in the book. Reeves also relates an anecdote involving a "Chief Parker" but is apparently unaware the person in question is Ely S. Parker, a Union officer and Seneca Indian who was on Grant's staff. That is, I am not a Civil War enthusiast and I know few of the specifics of any of the major battles. To be honest, I’ve simply been pleased with the winning side. But I am fascinated by the motivations of men on both sides and the realities of war they endured at extraordinary peril. Reeves’s books are so interesting to me because they look to other currents pulsing through the land. In his first book, The Lost Indictment of Robert E. Lee, I was fascinated by the investigation into a topic that — it seemed to me — had long been glossed over: Why wasn’t Lee tried for treason? And how did the perplexing Lost Cause narrative arise after secession and then a fight to destroy the Union? The political, legal, and cultural issues at play make for a great read. This book is a collection of small repeated biographies of characters invovled in the battle, drawn from other books. The descriptions of the fight are also a collection from other books and the author Morris Schaff, but this book dies NOT detail anything, it merely brushes over events..
